Description

The iconic Cygnus Wall is a wonderful target within the North America Nebula complex, particularly in the late summer and early fall timeframe. It's also one of my favorite targets as a test for any new telescope as it's reasonably easy, has tons of H-alpha, Oxygen-III and Sulfur-II emissions, and doesn't take exorbitantly large amounts of data. So, I thought this would be a good test for my new remote CDK14 setup.

However, being well into late December and early January, the target was very low in the sky which made capturing good data somewhat more difficult. Also, I was rather bored with the customary SHO palette with the blue and gold hues. So, I decided to create a new palette (inspired in part by the Foraxx palette, but wanting a wider spectrum of colors), with some interesting math with PixInsight. I used a combination of the traditional SHO as well as the new palette to render a version of the Cygnus Wall that is hopefully different but yet manages to articulate the various layers of nebular structures. It was actually quite fun tinkering around with the data until I got something that I liked.

Original Palette:
Red: S
Green: H
Blue: O
Along with SCNR to remove the greens.

ANI Palette:
Red: (O^~O)*S*1.5 + ~(O^~O)*H
Green: ((O*H)^~(O*H))*H + ~((O*H)^~(O*H))*O * 0.64 + ((S*H)^~(S*H))*S * 0.5
Blue: O * 0.8 + H * 0.2

I combined the two with some color masking to bring back the cyan hues, while retaining the reds, purples and golden hues. Hope you enjoy!
